Above the Fold is a newsletter (and now, print zine!) about dumplings and the people who make them. U.S.-based readers can find copies here, while those in the UK/EU/Canada can find copies here.
Hello to subscribers both new and old! Yes, things have been quiet on the newsletter front for a minute, but it’s because they’ve been quite loud (in my own mind, at least) on the print zine front—Issue 2 of Above the Fold is nearing the end of production and will launch later this winter. It is jam-packed (or shall I say, stuffed) with dumpling stories (like, SO many), which means that way, way more will start hitting your inbox next year. More on that later, but also soon.
In the meantime, keep on scrolling, because:
Holiday special Above the Fold gift packs are here!
We got a shout out in Saveur!
People are putting Thanksgiving dinner inside of their dumplings!
1. Special holiday gift sets are here—and come with brand-new Riso print color ways AND notecards!
Whether you already own your copy of Above the Fold but want to gift one for a friend or family member for the holidays, or don’t have one yet and ALSO want to gift one for a friend or family member for the holidays, you’re in luck!
For a limited time (read: until supplies run out), it’s now possible to get bonus Riso prints and notecards packaged up alongside your zines. It’s only $5 extra for these accessories, so this is a pretty great deal.
Gift Set 1: Treat yourself
$25: 1 copy of Above the Fold, 1 special Riso print in fluorescent pink and scarlet, and a three-pack of brand-new “Make Way For Dumplings” notecards, which come with Kraft paper envelopes and are quite adorable, if I do say so myself. (They were lovingly hand-printed, scored + creased by yours truly, so I’m obviously biased.)
Gift Set 2: Treat yourself + someone else
$45: 2 copies of Above the fold, 2 Riso prints, and 6 notecards. A gift pack for you, a gift pack for them, and $5 off for doubling up! You’re basically getting 2 Riso prints and 6 notecards for $5! It’s the deal of a lifetime! (Please note: These will both be shipped to the same place; otherwise you’ll have to place two separate orders.)
2. Saveur gave Above the Fold a shout-out!
In September, Saveur published a roundup of their 19 favorite indie food zines, and Above the Fold made the list. It’s not ranked, but it is alphabetical, and so it was inadvertently advantageous that the zine starts with the letter A. Thank you kindly to editor Jessica Carbone for the shout-out and the interview.
3. It’s Thanksgiving Dinner…In a Dumpling!
In this edition of “excerpt from my saves folder,” here three delightful-looking dough pockets filled to the gills with turkey and the works:
You can get these savory “Gobbler” pop-tarts from Molly Malloys, located in Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market, drizzled in gravy.
This isn’t for tracking down—because you can’t—but it’s certainly for beholding. Hawaii-based pastry magician Hana Quon took all of the elements of Thanksgiving dinner, stacked them with aesthetic precision, and wrapped it all in flaky pastry.
New York-based dumpling company Mimi Cheng’s offers limited-edition Thanksgiving dumplings each November—and this year is no different.
And with this, I leave you! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
